Westminster houses the UK Parliament, with the present palace largely shaped by rebuilding after the 1834 fire. Westminster Hall survives from the older complex, placing different centuries beside each other. We rank it third for explaining institutional continuity alongside physical change. The history of Parliament is also a history of changing representation; the age of a chamber should never be taken as proof that modern voting rights existed throughout its life.
