On 10 April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration released a reconstructed image around M87’s central supermassive black hole. A bright emission ring surrounds a dark region associated with the black hole’s shadow. It belongs here because a worldwide radio-telescope network resolved structure on a scale relevant to strong-gravity predictions. This is not a conventional optical photograph of an event horizon, nor a view inside a black hole.
