On 2 November 2000, Bill Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev arrived aboard the International Space Station. Their expedition began the station’s sequence of resident crews, turning an assembled orbital structure into a lived-in laboratory. It earns a place for sustained operations and international cooperation rather than a new distance record. The image shows the station later in 2000; its configuration continued changing as more elements were added.
