Diversification spreads exposure across investments, industries or asset classes. Holding two funds that own the same companies may add little diversification. A portfolio covering different businesses reduces dependence on any single issuer, but broad market declines can still cause losses. This concept belongs beside stocks and bonds because the mix of holdings matters as well as each holding; diversification cannot eliminate every risk.
